The problem with virtual private networks these days is
that they are, well, a bit rigid. In most cases, you have to be an employee to get in. And in many
cases, you have to be using a PC, and it has to be in a fixed location.

lighten up. The idea? To make it as easy for customers, partners, and highly mobile employees to

Stonesoft Upgrades Security Platform with New Disaster Recovery Features
Stonesoft recently
announced the availability of StoneGate Management Center and Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) 4.0
with features that increase overall business continuity and threat detection. The new versions,
part of the latest StoneGate Secure Connectivity Solution, provide disaster recovery capabilities
for backup security systems control in the event of a network failure and smarter detection
features to prevent encoded data attacks.
The new version of StoneGate Management Center is designed to meet disaster recovery best
practices with a high-availability utility that allows organizations to cluster up to five
management devices -- one primary and four standby units -- for distributed and enhanced network
security control. With real-time data replication across all management servers, StoneGate
Management Center can provide an up-to-date view of security policies, configuration and security
device status, alerts, and reports in the event of a data center loss.

Stonesoft has developed and patented a unique technology to protect a specific class of
security vulnerabilities that can be exploited via malicious web programs, or applets. The patent
is called ‘Method and device for handling related connections in a firewall’ and has been granted
European-wide patent.

Stonesoft Establishes New Patent for Detection of
Buffer Overflow Attacks
Stonesoft has developed and patented a new technique for detecting
attacks and exploits against previously unknown vulnerabilities. The patented invention provides
two main advantages: improved performance due to the smaller size and number of fingerprints to be
matched with the network traffic; and more importantly, the ability to detect new exploits and
attacks against previously unknown vulnerabilities without knowing the exact attack code. The
patent is called ‘An intrusion detection method and system’ and has been granted European-wide
patent.
