Press Release

StoneGate IPS provides pre-emptive protection against the latest Microsoft vulnerability

Helsinki, Finland – 24 October 2008 – Stonesoft, an innovative provider of integrated network security and business continuity solutions, has today announced its StoneGate IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) provides pre-emptive protection against the latest vulnerability announced by Microsoft. StoneGate customers have had full protection against this most recent vulnerability since August 2006.

Yesterday, on 23 October, Microsoft provided an emergency fix for a critical vulnerability in their system. The Stonesoft Vulnerability Analysis Team discovered that Stonesoft already offers pre-emptive protection for the vulnerability in question. Thus, all Stonesoft customers that use StoneGate IPS to protect their Windows networks are protected against this vulnerability.

“We are proud to say our StoneGate customers already have full protection against this most recent vulnerability. This proves that StoneGate signatures cover more than just one attack: they provide protection against many variations of the attack that uses the same or similar vulnerability. So, it is not the number of signatures that counts, but the quality and coverage of that fingerprint that matters”, said Klaus Majewski, Vice President of Marketing at Stonesoft.

“Microsoft released an Out-of-Band security advisory regarding a critical security flaw that allows system level remote compromise in the Server service that affects all supported versions of Windows. However, StoneGate IPS has a pre-emptive signature that terminates attacks exploiting this vulnerability”, explains Olli-Pekka Niemi, Vulnerability Expert and team leader of the Vulnerability Analysis team at Stonesoft.

“This fingerprint situation has been included in the default policy since 11 August 2006. Our customers do not have to do anything: they have full protection against this vulnerability”, Niemi continues.
